Course materials

Slides, readings and links for the students of a subject, in sections the lecturer names — “Week 1”, “Topic: integrals”. The lecturers put them up on their own web page, the students read them on the student portal or inside the learning platform, and the student office sees every subject in one list.

  • Draft, published, or shown from a date
  • Last year’s materials copied in one step
  • Downloads counted, students not tracked

What it does

  • Sections and items. A section holds files and links, each with a title and an optional note, in the order the lecturer sets.
  • Files that cannot run anything: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, JPG and PNG, up to 24 MB a file. The type is read from the file itself, not from its name, and macro-enabled documents are not taken.
  • Links to any web address, opened in a new tab.
  • Visibility per section and per item: a draft only the lecturers see, published, or shown from a date.
  • Per academic year. This year’s students see this year’s materials; last year’s stay, and the lecturer copies them into the new year in one step, choosing what carries over.
  • What is new. A student opening a subject sees what has appeared since their last visit. When a section is published with something in it, the subject’s students can be told through messages — a notice the school switches on.

How it goes

  1. The lecturer opens “My course materials”

On their own page of the web timetable, with the subjects they teach: where they are the holder, where the timetable gives them the course, or where they examine.

  2. Sections are filled and published

Files uploaded, links added, sections moved into order — published now, or from the date the week begins.

  3. The students read them

On the student portal, or inside a course of Moodle, Canvas, Brightspace or Blackboard, where a lecturer embeds the subject’s materials through LTI.

  4. The office keeps an eye on the whole year

One row per subject: its sections and files, what the students see, drafts, the space used, the downloads and the last change.

Who sees what

  • The subject’s lecturers see everything, drafts included. The holder always changes the materials; the other lecturers do while the holder lets them.
  • The students of the subject — by the school’s rule: enrolled in a curriculum that has the subject, the electives they took, the timetable groups it is taught to, or its exam records. The same rule the Moodle sync uses, so a student sees here what Moodle would enrol them in.
  • The student office sees every subject and may hide a section or a file from the students, with a reason the lecturer reads, logged. It never edits a lecturer’s materials.
  • Space is asked about, not refused. Past the school’s space for one subject in a year, the lecturer is asked, and the answer is logged.
  • No per-student statistics. Downloads are counted per file, never per student. The only record of a student is their last visit, used to mark what is new, and it is deleted when the academic year ends.

Not yet

  • Video and other file types are not taken; a recording is put up as a link to where it is hosted.
  • Assignments, quizzes and forums are not part of Wise Ed. They belong in the school’s learning platform, which Wise Ed connects to rather than replaces.

Questions about course materials

We already have Moodle. Why would we use this?

You may not need to. Course materials are for subjects and schools without a learning platform, or where the lecturers want one place for slides and readings. Where the school has Moodle, the same materials can also be embedded in its courses through LTI.

Can the student office remove something a lecturer put up?

It can hide it from the students at once — from the portal and from the LMS — with a reason the lecturer reads. The lecturer still sees the item and can change it; the office can show it again.

Who decides whether assistants may change the materials?

The subject’s holder, on their web page. The office sets the rule only when the holder cannot — when they are away or the subject has no holder in the catalogue — and the change is logged with its reason.

Do lecturers have to upload everything again every year?

No. They copy last year’s materials into the new year; a copied file is the same file, not a second one taking space.
