Attendance

Wise Timetable takes attendance by a rotating QR code; with Wise Ed the lecturer can also call the roll by hand, after the lesson if need be. Both write the same list of the same lesson, so the reports, the alerts, the parents’ view and the exam rules all count one attendance, never two.

  • One list per lesson, by QR code or by hand
  • Alerts by the school’s rules, before it is too late
  • Excused absences and exempt students never judged
  • On where the school takes attendance in Wise Timetable

What it does

  • QR code in the room. The lecturer opens the lesson and shows a code that changes every few seconds; students scan it with the Wise Timetable app or the phone’s camera. That is Wise Timetable’s attendance, and Wise Ed reads its lists.
  • Roll call by hand. For a seminar of twelve, a lab, or a lesson whose list was forgotten until the evening: on their own page the lecturer sees today’s lessons and those of the last 7 or 14 days, opens one and marks each student present, late, absent or excused — or presses All present and changes the few who were not. A lesson that is over opens without a question — taking attendance afterwards is what a roll call is for.
  • Attendance of a subject, for its lecturer: each student’s rate for a period, the requirement the alerts use, and who is below it — with the lesson-by-lesson report one click away.
  • One list, whichever way. A roll call and a scan land on the same list of the same lesson; closing the list marks everybody still unmarked as absent, and every mark can be changed afterwards.
  • Alerts from the school’s rules — a general rule and rules per subject, each with the share required, a warning line and how many lessons to wait before anybody is judged. Every night the lists are judged against them; the student, the subject’s lecturers and the office are told, each as the school chooses. See the student file.
  • Parents and class teachers. Where the school lets parents in, they see their child’s attendance and excuse an absence with a form; the class teacher or the office accepts it, and the absences become excused. See third-party access.
  • Attendance as a condition for an exam is an option, off by default; switched on, it asks at registration, it does not refuse.

A roll call, start to finish

  1. The lecturer opens their page

Today’s lessons and those of the last days, each with the state of its list: not taken, open, closed.

  2. Opens the lesson

Their own lesson opens at once. Another lecturer’s, or one that has not begun, is asked first — as the QR code’s screen asks — and the list records who took it.

  3. Marks the students

All present first, then one tap for each who was late, absent or excused. Save keeps the list open.

  4. Saves and finishes

Whoever is still unmarked is absent. A finished list can still be corrected, and it is the record of the lesson for the reports, the alerts and the parents.

Rules and switches

  • A subject’s own rule replaces the general one for all of that subject’s lists, those taken before the rule was written included; the exam condition uses it too, where the subject has one.
  • Attendance is the school’s choice. Without Wise Timetable’s attendance switched on, no button is drawn anywhere; a school that wants the QR code only switches the roll call off.
  • Students exempt by a special status are never judged, and excused absences never count.
  • A lecturer sees the lessons they teach, and the students of those lessons; a substitute’s list says who took it.
  • Nothing is stored twice. Wise Ed keeps no attendance of its own — so a report, an alert and what a parent sees cannot disagree about a single lesson.

Questions about attendance

Do we need projectors in every room?

No. The code can be shown on the lecturer’s laptop or phone, and where there is no screen at all the lecturer calls the roll by hand.

Can a lecturer take attendance after the lesson?

Yes — that is what the roll call is for: the lessons of the last 7 or 14 days are on the page, and a finished list can still be corrected.

Who decides when a student is warned?

The school, in its attendance rules: the share required, the warning line, how many lessons to wait for, and who hears of it.
